Exercising during travel

Going on a business trip? A week’s vacation? Wondering how you would get your exercise in during that time? Don’t worry. Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, with a little bit of imagination you can have fun without sacrificing your fitness level. Today, most hotels have a gym, but in case yours doesn’t have one, the following will provide you with a good workout until your return:

A pair of good walking shoes. Forget the trains and buses. Combine sightseeing with exercise by walking or jogging through the city. You can jog one way and walk the other way while enjoying the sights.

Resistance bands. In this day and age when we are being restricted with the amount of luggage, we can carry, resistance bands give you all the workout you need without the added weight of dumbbells. They come in different strengths and are colour coded. Choose the one that is right for you.

Use the furniture: Tie one end of the band around the arm of a chair and do biceps and triceps curls. Tie it on the leg of the chair and the other end around your ankle to work your inner and outer thighs and hamstrings. Sit on the chair, wrap the band around your foot and raise leg at the knee to exercise your quadriceps muscles.

If you are wary of lying on the hotel carpet, try this for your ab workout: Sit on the edge of a straight-backed chair, hands on the arms, and raise your knees to your chest. If you do this exercise sideways you will exercise the obliques as well.

Use the wall for push-ups. Stand facing the wall, place your arms at shoulder height on it and push, straightening your arms. This is very effective, and you can do as many reps as you like.

Don’t forget your swimsuit. Take advantage of the hotel pool to add to or cool down after your workout.

Being away from home can add a new dimension to your exercise experience. You don’t have to miss out.
