For many people, ageing is associated with a decline in strength, flexibility and vitality. Also, illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes and a host of others usually appear with increasing age. Nowadays, many people are discovering that exercise can provide relief or stave off these negative offshoots of ageing.
Research shows that it is never too late to begin exercising. There are different types of exercise suited to all ages and physical conditions; therefore there is little reason to not exercise. Exercise can add few to several years to your life and dramatically improve the quality of your life. If you have health problems, you should consult your doctor before beginning any form of exercise, and then begin gradually, increasing the intensity as you become stronger.
To fully reap the benefits of exercise, you should be consistent. Sporadic exercise can do more harm than good. If you have never exercised much in your life, beginning a walking program is a good place to start. You may begin walking for 15 minutes three times a week and gradually work up to 30 minutes five times a week and cultivate a habit which can last you a lifetime.
During that time, you will see your body becoming stronger, leaner and more flexible. Your balance and posture will improve and you will appear more graceful. High blood pressure, diabetes and even arthritis become more manageable. Your sleep will also improve and your mental faculties will seem sharper. You begin to think, feel and look younger. By this time you should have introduced other forms of exercise for the sake of variety. Cycling, swimming, gardening and rowing are all good forms of low-impact exercise.
Strength-training should also be undertaken to help add muscle mass, strengthen bones, improve balance and decrease the risk of falling. Whether you choose free weights or machines will depend on your preference and/or capabilities. Just remember to use caution, begin with light weights and increase to those that you can handle with proper form. The key is to enjoy your workouts and ultimately, your life.
